You can get to Mafia Island in two ways: by boat or by plane. Most travelers elect to fly, as it is not only easy, but also fast (just 30 minutes from Dar es Salaam to Kilindoni airport). Those with tighter budgets or a taste for adventure, or both, may be found on the ferry, which crosses every day from Nyamisati (about 150km south of Dar es Salaam) direct to Kilindoni port. The ferry takes 4-5 hours.
We are happy to arrange transportation for our guests. To arrange a flight to or from Mafia, please contact us. Alternatively, visit the websites of the two main services: Tropical Air (www.tropicalair.co.tz) or Coastal Aviation (www.coastalaviation.co.tz). Most flights cost around US$130 one-way.
To take the ferry, you'll need to get yourself to Nyamisati. The cheapest way from Dar es Salaam is to get a minibus ("dalla-dalla") from Rangi Tatu station. This should cost no you more than TSH 6,000 per person. Once in Nyamisati, find the small ferry office and purchase your ticket before boarding. It should cost TSH 12,500 per person. You may need to spend the night in Nyamisati, as the ferry can leave too early for you to make it on time. The Nyamisati Mission has rooms for TSH 10,000 per person, per night. Find Noah in town.
To return, we'll be happy to help you find the Kilindoni ticket office. You'll need to book your journey the day before, and it will cost the same: TSH 12,500. At the moment, the ferries depart each way at 6am. But this may change, so be prepared!
